The VNSNY CHOICE Adult Day Center is lucky to have a fantastic group of volunteers that help us serve our members! Volunteers come to us from all walks of life, ages (12 – 80 years old) and cultural backgrounds. They have a wide variety of talents and skills to share with our members, including pet therapy, art, music and computers. Most importantly, they bring companionship and compassion to support our members.

I recently read a quote from President Woodrow Wilson that moved me and really described our volunteers: “You are not here to…

The Girl Scouts Troop 1986 is working hard on their 2013 intergenerational project at the VNSNY CHOICE Adult Day Center. The goal of this year’s initiative is to create nutrition-related in home activity kits for an underserved community in Westchester. Some bags will go to VNSNY CHOICE Westchester and others may go to a Meals on Wheels Program in Mt. Vernon.

A few months ago, Troop 1986 Heart of the Hudson, came to the Center to introduce the project. The Girl Scouts gave a cooking demonstration and led a discussion group…

Christmas ornamentThe holidays are a festive time of year at the VNSNY CHOICE Adult Day Center. Since we serve seniors from over 30 countries, it’s important to us that we incorporate all cultures and traditions into our celebrations.

In addition to all of our holiday parties filled with multi-cultural entertainment, music and dancing, we had a tree-trimming party that sparked lots of reminiscing. Members’ faces lit up as they talked about memories and traditions from their countries. Ms. S. remembered making their family ornaments. She said that our tree-trimming festivities help to…

For years, our members have been telling us that coming to the VNSNY CHOICE Adult Day Center “makes them feel better.”  We decided to dig deeper and find out exactly how it helps them. We had a great discussion and they shared with us how coming to the center, socializing with friends and staff (their second family) and keeping busy with activities improves the quality of their day-to-day lives and helps them focus on the positive.

Ms. S. told us that she woke up last week and didn’t feel like coming to the Center.…

This morning, I watched with joy, as our members laughed their way through another exercise session. Our Activity Coordinator uses humor to engage the seniors and they happily participate in exercise, despite their functional limitations and pain level. At the VNSNY CHOICE Adult Day Center, we use humor to engage seniors in all types of activities, and here are some reasons why it works!

  • Some seniors may not be comfortable participating in activities that are new to them, but humor loosens them up, opens them up to trying something new, and…

Everyday, we offer exercise at the VNSNY CHOICE Adult Day Center. We do something different everyday to keep our members interested. From yoga to stretching to chair dancing to Wii to DJ dance parties, we keep our members involved and moving to the best of their abilities. Fun is also a key ingredient to keeping them engaged – the more they laugh, the more they move! During our exercise group yesterday, members talked about why they like exercising here at the center – interesting thoughts…

  • We encourage each other to do better!
  • At…

On Tuesday, we celebrated Grandparents Day with our friends from the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and Daisies in Westchester. Victoria, from Troop 1986, has been coming to the center and coordinating activities for the seniors for the past 6 years. Here are some of her thoughts about the day…

Sharing Grandparents Day with the VNSNY CHOICE Adult Day Center and some of my scouts was a great opportunity to celebrate grandparents. By using cooking, I was able to bring my great grandmother’s memory to life. I shared her favorite recipes and cookbooks, which she kept…

At the VNSNY CHOICE Adult Day Center, we serve seniors that speak four languages, come from over 25 countries and have varying cognitive and education levels. It’s not a “one program serve all” type of environment. The Activity Coordinators are very mindful to create a variety of activities to maximize each member’s experience at the center.

On any given day, multiple activities are offered at one time to give our members choices and to allow them to pursue their individual interests. Today, we had exercise, art, mah jong, dominoes and music…

Ms. P. was a member in the VNSNY CHOICE Managed Long Term Care Program (MLTC), for people that need help with day-to-day activities but want to remain in their homes. When someone joins VNSNY CHOICE (http://2012.vnsnychoice.org), a team of health professionals develop and coordinate a comprehensive plan of care. As part of Ms. P’s plan of care, her nurse referred her to the VNSNY CHOICE Adult Day Center for socialization, recreation therapy, supervision and personal care during the day. It was becoming increasingly challenging for Ms. P’s caregiver to care…

The VNSNY CHOICE Adult Day Center is grateful for the Occupational Therapy students from New York University (NYU) recently doing placements at our center. They came full of enthusiasm and ready to apply their knowledge to an adult day setting. They created a variety of projects to engage our seniors in different ways. One activity focused on international dance, which was especially meaningful for our multi-cultural population. They also worked with our seniors on a baking activity. For their art project, they taught seniors to make a fabric fortune cookie…
