Do your streets look like the one in this photo? If so then it may be a good idea to stay indoors even if you’re a winter warrior like my 97 year young member.

Walking outdoors in inclement weather can increase the risk of falls because sidewalk pavement may be uneven or have cracks. Decreased visibility from falling snow or from covered sidewalks will affect your ability to walk safely.

IMG_3044It’s below freezing outside with a slight breeze. Is taking a leisurely 30 minute walk outdoors the last thing on your mind?

97 years young

I recently visited a 97 year young man who lived within walking distance from the beaches of Far Rockaway, Queens. I was a bit surprised when he shared that after the visit, he was planning to go outside with his home attendant to start his daily 30 minute walk. Cold Snap, or Layers, Layers, Layers

For the last few weeks, most of the country has had unseasonably cold weather. This can be very dangerous, and it’s important for everyone to take special precautions. 

Simple tips to keep in mind:

  • When you go out, it’s important to dress in layers. I personally like fleece sweaters because I find them soft and warm. Remember to have your hands and feet covered, preferably with insulated and waterproof materials. 
  • It’s important to wear a hat since most of the body’s heat escapes from the head. Find one that covers the ears, or wear earmuffs.
