The VNSNY CHOICE Adult Day Center is so lucky to partner with Girl Scout Troop 1986 to create fun and meaningful intergenerational programs for our seniors! Congratulations to Victoria, one of our Scouts that wrote and received a grant from Generations United in Washington DC! Funding will go toward an intergenerational nutritionally based program, which will not only help our seniors but will extend way beyond our four walls. The program will include a Grandparents Day event, creation of an intergenerational cookbook and in-home activity kits for 150 seniors in Westchester.

We’re looking forward to the Grandparents Day event the Scouts have planned here next week. They’ve asked our seniors to bring in recipes they made for their grandchildren. Seniors will also bring in recipes that their grandparents made for THEM! The Scouts are also bringing in favorite family recipes. Everyone will share stories and reminisce about what makes the recipes special and how long the recipes have been in the family. Scouts will also bake some of their recipes and share their delicious creations with everyone.

After our Grandparents Day event, the Scouts will put together an intergenerational cookbook. Later in 2012, the Scouts will work with our seniors to put together in-home activity kits for home-bound seniors in the community, and the intergenerational cookbooks will be included in the activity kits. We can’t wait to see what our innovative Scouts create next!!

Discussion

  • Thanks Debbie – I just finished updating my grandmother’s recipe to make it sugar free for anyone who is diabetic. Looking forward to the event!

  • Victoria, thanks so much for all you and your troops do for our seniors. The compassion and sensitivity the Scouts show towards our members is so impressive!
