redballoon-mdWe incorporate some type of physical activity everyday at the VNSNY CHOICE Adult Day Center. Physical activities may include yoga, dancing, chair exercise, Wii games or balloon volleyball, just to name a few… There are so many physical and mental benefits to exercise and even while we’re having fun, the benefits are apparent. For example, balloon volleyball helps range of motion, eye/hand coordination, focus and attention, and mood (as witnessed by all the laughter).

Ms. N. told the group that she had a stroke in 2009, when she was 90 years old.  She was in the hospital for a month and she couldn’t walk when she was discharged to the rehab center. Through physical therapy, she learned to walk again. Once she got home and she returned to the Day Center, through exercise she continued to build up her strength, and her walking continued to improve. Ms. N. shared that when she started moving and exercising again, everything felt better – not only did her body feel better, but her mood and quality of life improved as well. Now, at the age of 93, she says that “exercising at the center keeps her moving mentally and physically!”
