Nursing Students – Getting the Word Out About Adult Day Services

Over the past two months, we were lucky enough to have nursing student interns from Columbia University. The students were truly exceptional and, in a very short time, they became part of our day center family. One of the many reasons we offer intern opportunities to students, especially nursing students, is because so many people are not familiar with adult day services and the essential support they provide to seniors and caregivers. I believe it’s extremely important to get the word out about this type of program to nursing students because it gives them a better understanding about the continuum of care and community services available to help patients they may care for in the future.

It was so rewarding when both students told me when they first came to our center, they never heard of adult day services. They had such a positive experience here, that now they want to open up an adult day center!   It’s so gratifying to hear people in the community embrace the concept and benefit of adult day services!

On their last day with us, they wrote a beautiful thank you letter to our staff –

“We want to thank you for everything you have done for us. You all welcomed us in with open arms and made us feel comfortable in a new environment. You are some of the nicest, most kind-hearted individuals we have ever met, and we can only hope that we have the opportunity to care for people as much as you all do!”

Thank YOU to Lisa and Carly – we’ll miss you and we wish you the very best of luck in your nursing careers!   If you’re interested in volunteering or interning at the VNSNY CHOICE Adult Day Center or any program at VNSNY, please check out the volunteer section of the VNSNY website – http://www.vnsny.org/community/support-vnsny/volunteers/
