Volunteers are a vital part of the VNSNY CHOICE Adult Day Center. They bring their talents and compassionate care to our seniors every day. We are grateful for their contributions to our center, and we’re very appreciative of the VNSNY Volunteer Department staff who work hard to find the help we need.
This week I had the honor of celebrating the 90th birthday for one of our very special center volunteers. Mr. A. volunteered with us for over 3 years. He’s a retired Broadway Director but you would never know about his very accomplished background. He’s humble and always focused solely on our seniors. Mr. A. led discussion groups on a wide range of topics including marriage, children, family, relationships or whatever the seniors wanted to talk about—there were always lively discussions!
He’s the kind of person who makes everyone feel comfortable and special. In our center, we have seniors from over 25 countries, and no matter what their background, they opened up to him freely. The amazing thing about Mr. A. was that although he gave so selflessly to help us, he often told us how he was the one who benefitted from volunteering at our center. He spoke of how much he learned from our seniors, how their words stayed with him and how good it made him feel to give back. He so graciously gave his time and energy to our seniors, and for that we will always be grateful.
