It’s below freezing outside with a slight breeze. Is taking a leisurely 30 minute walk outdoors the last thing on your mind?
97 years young
I recently visited a 97 year young man who lived within walking distance from the beaches of Far Rockaway, Queens. I was a bit surprised when he shared that after the visit, he was planning to go outside with his home attendant to start his daily 30 minute walk. It was about 25 degrees that morning, that’s right 25 degrees!
The man explained that the daily walk kept his mind and body sharp. Before I left his home, we shared a laugh when I made plans to see him for his next annual visit after he turns 98. He then bundled up and prepared to go on his daily walk.
My hope is that one day I could reach the age of 97 years young like this man.
Benefits of a daily walking
Take a look at VNSNY’s winter fall prevention guide before going outside this winter. What are some ways in which you keep your mind and body sharp? Do you know any seniors who continue to amaze you by their daily fitness routines?

My 70 year old mother walks at least two or three miles a day and she loves it. It’s her exercise and her relaxation. I am always amazed when I call and it is freezing outside and my dad tells me she’s out walking. Kudos!

Happy New Year & how are you?
I think it’s great that your 97 yr is able & willing to a walk daily even on an extremely cold day. I won’t recommand taking that walk when it’s snowing though. My own mom, in her late 70’s, can hardly walk half a mile even on the niciest day. So good for him.
